    Sports and Competitions

The 2024 Olympic Games will host 329 competitions across 32 sports, along with the iconic opening ceremony featuring barges floating on the Seine. The Olympic Village will be located near the Stade de France, in the municipalities of Saint-Denis, Île Saint-Denis, and Saint-Ouen.

Breakdancing, skateboarding, climbing, and surfing are new sports in the Olympic Games.

    Opening and Closing Ceremonies

On July 26, 2024, Paris will host the largest opening ceremony ever organized for the Olympic Games. Each national team will have a dedicated barge traveling 6 kilometers along the Seine, from the Austerlitz Bridge to the Iéna Bridge, passing in front of the Trocadéro.

Result: Over 10,000 athletes will parade through the city, with 100,000 spectators seated along the river and over 400,000 more spectators nearby.

The closing ceremony will take place on August 11th at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, where the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, will hand over the Olympic flag to the President of the IOC, Thomas Bach, and then to the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass. This symbolic gesture represents the passing of the Olympic spirit to the next host city, Los Angeles, which will host the Olympic Games in 2028.

The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games will not mark the end of the Games. The Paralympic Games begin on August 28, 2024, with an opening ceremony featuring over 4,000 Paralympians parading down the Champs-Élysées to the Place de la Concorde. The closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games will also be held at the Stade de France on September 8, 2024, marking the end of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

    Environment and Sustainability

At the beginning of the 1900s, Olympic swimming events, such as the 1900 Games in Paris, took place in rivers or other natural bodies of water. However, over the past century, swimming in the Seine has been prohibited due to pollution and sewage discharges from the city's sewage system.

Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced an ambitious €1.4 billion plan to clean the city's river to allow for open water swimming and triathlon events in the river. If the cleaning efforts succeed, the river will remain open for swimming after the Games.

While past Olympic Games have been criticized for their excessive carbon footprint, times have changed, and Paris has taken note. The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be the first fully carbon-neutral Olympic Games. Organizers have taken steps to reduce the event's carbon footprint, including using renewable energy sources and recycling materials.

The Paris Games will utilize 95% of existing infrastructure, showcasing Paris's magnificent architectural heritage and avoiding carbon pollution associated with large construction projects. The Olympic Village will use sustainable materials such as wood in its construction and will be transformed into 2,800 homes after the Games.

No major infrastructure will be created for the mountain biking competition on the Elancourt hill. Regarding the carbon footprint of athletes and spectators, organizers are implementing a voluntary offsetting plan to neutralize the impact.

    Security

Security is a top priority for the organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Strict security measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of participants, spectators, and residents of the city. French authorities will deploy 35,000 police officers for the opening ceremony, along with several thousand additional private security guards. On average, between 30,000 to 45,000 police officers will patrol the region to ensure the security of the events.

    Conclusion

While Paris has already hosted the Olympic Games twice, in 1900 and 1924, the 2024 Games will make history for the city like no other. The opening ceremony will provide a unique spectacle on a scale never seen before for the Olympic Games. The organizers of this major sporting event are committed to making the 2024 Games sustainable, safe, and inclusive.
